چکیده

Automatic adaptation has the potential to enhance the performance of a wide variety of assistive technologies. This paper describes two adaptive assistive technologies: (1) a "smart wheelchair" that selects its operating mode based on current task requirements and (2) a row-colunm scanning keyboard that changes its scanning rate to conform to the capabilities of the user. The reasoning method underlying each system’s adaptation decisions, a probabilistic reasoning construct known as Bayesian networks, is also discussed.

A multi-dimensional model enabling autonomic reasoning for context-aware pervasive applications

A fundamental requirement for autonomic computing is to be able to automatically infer how human users react in similar contextual conditions. This paper examines the problem of autonomic reasoning for adapting context-aware applications in mobile and pervasive computing environments. In this type of systems, both the context and the adaptation possibilities must be modeled appropriately to ena...

Adapting Perception, Action, and Technology for Mathematical Reasoning

Formal mathematical reasoning provides an illuminating test case for understanding how humans can think about things that they did not evolve to comprehend. People engage in algebraic reasoning by (1) creating new assemblies of perception and action routines that evolved originally for other purposes (reuse), (2) adapting those routines to better fit the formal requirements of mathematics (adap...

Load-Frequency Control: a GA based Bayesian Networks Multi-agent System

Bayesian Networks (BN) provides a robust probabilistic method of reasoning under uncertainty. They have been successfully applied in a variety of real-world tasks but they have received little attention in the area of load-frequency control (LFC). In practice, LFC systems use proportional-integral controllers. However since these controllers are designed using a linear model, the nonlinearities...

Modeling of a Probabilistic Re-Entrant Line Bounded by Limited Operation Utilization Time

This paper presents an analytical model based on mean value analysis (MVA) technique for a probabilistic re-entrant line. The objective is to develop a solution method to determine the total cycle time of a Reflow Screening (RS) operation in a semiconductor assembly plant. The uniqueness of this operation is that it has to be borrowed from another department in order to perform the production s...
